  1. When does the hands-free law go into effect? The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2008. There will be no grace period and no fix-it tickets issued.
  2. What is required under the hands-free law? Drivers have to use a hands-free device such as a headset or speakerphone when using their cell phone while on the road. Teenage drivers under 18 years of age can't use their cell phone at all while on the road. Hands-free devices are not permitted.
  3. What are the fines for not complying with the hands-free law? Drivers will be ticketed $20 for the first offense (up to $70 after penalties are added); subsequent violations will be $50 (up to $175 after penalties are added).
  4. Will I be stopped just for holding a cell phone to my ear while on the road? Yes. Since not abiding by the hands-free law is a primary offense, drivers can be stopped and fined just for holding a cell phone to their ear while on the road.
