- When does the hands-free law go into effect? The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2008. There will be no grace period and no fix-it tickets issued.
- What is required under the hands-free law? Drivers have to use a hands-free device such as a headset or speakerphone when using their cell phone while on the road.
- What are the fines for not complying with the hands-free law? Drivers will be fined $124 for the first and any subsequent violations.
- Will I be stopped just for holding a cell phone to my ear while on the road? No. Since not abiding by the hands-free law is a secondary offense, drivers will be stopped only if they are found to be driving unsafe or are in violation of other laws.
